Jim's Canning Tips
- Washing Rings
- If you have a water tower on the bottom rack of your dishwasher, I've found that you can throw the rings from your
canning jars over the tower to wash them. The wide-mouth
rings will actually fit over the regular-mouth rings and you can
get two layers of rings per load.
- I found a set of rubber-band bungies at the local Wal-Mart
designed to hold lightweight items down in your dishwasher.
They have hooks on each end and are designed to stretch from one
end of the dishwasher basket to the other. You can string
a slew of rings on one of these.
- Dishwasher baskets that are designed for holding baby items
can also usually fit canning rings.
- Keeping Lids & Rings Warm
- Use a small slow-cooker! No need to take up a burner
on the stove if you have a slow-cooker around. Just throw
some hot water in there, plug it up and turn it on, add your
rings and lids and you are good to go.
